Description
Flat waterstones are critical for straight blade edges when sharpening. Flat chisel and plane blade backs are also critical to create sharp accurate blades.
Our Lapping Plate is made in Adelaide. It is of mild steel 230mm long x 90mm wide x 12mm thick. The main two faces are ground flat. We then CNC machine a criss/cross of diamond shaped grooves on one side to allow sharpening stone flattening.
The Lapping Plate comes with 3 pieces of adhesive backed sandpaper, 120, 220 & 320 grit. Each piece is pre cut to the Lapping Plate length along with a non-slip rubber mat to put between the plate & your bench. The sandpaper is for use on the flat non-grooved side.
Grooved side:
Place the Lapping Plate on your bench or table, you can use the supplied rubber mat to keep it stable. Mark your stone with around 6 horizontal pencil lines across the width of the stone, rub the stone on the Lapping Plate until all the pencil lines disappear. When this happens your stone is flat.
Plain side:
The supplied adhesive backed sandpaper will adhere to the lapping plate perfectly. You can then use this set up to remove chips from plane blades & chisels, or to flatten the back of plane blades & chisels. After you get to 320 grit you can then continue with your water stones (previously flattened) to get a shine on your tools.
Another method is to make a grit slurry on the flat plate with a water stone. Just wet the non-grooved side with a spray of water and circularly rub your stone on the plate where it will leave some grit to make a slurry. Then you can rub the back of your chisel or plane blade to a lustrous shine. You can start with around 1000 grit, then rinse off the grit and use another finer grit such as 4000 or 5000.
When you are finished stone flattening, dry off the plate, it is mild steel which will easily rust. A wipe with Camellia Oil will help.
So, you have the choice of using the flat plain side for lapping with sandpaper or the diamond shaped machined side for water stone flattening, you can add fine lapping powder to the grooved side if you wish.
